Can the authorities inspect anyone’s tax affairs?
The tax authorities can inspect anyone.
You will be informed of a tax audit or tax investigation when the tax authority contacts you. For a tax audit, a tax officer will generally want to visit you and check your tax records. As standard, a tax investigation will start with a formal letter requesting information.
The letter will state whether the tax authority is investigating a particular aspect of your taxes or carrying out a full tax investigation. Your accountant will also be able to determine why there is a tax investigation (e.g. whether they suspect tax fraud).
Generally, a tax enquiry starts within 12 months of the due date for the tax return it relates to or if you missed the due date, 12 months after you filed the return.
